How to prepare a sitemap for a small business website

Website Rebuild guides · Published · 2 min read

A sitemap lists the public URLs you want search engines to discover. Build it from the final page inventory, then verify that the listed addresses are the preferred working versions.

Choose the URLs deliberately

Include canonical public pages and useful articles. Leave out private previews, intentionally noindexed pages and addresses that redirect elsewhere. Check that the hostname and protocol match the public site. A sitemap is not the place to list every temporary URL created during development.

Generate the file

For a small site, an XML sitemap can be created from the route list. Use fully qualified HTTPS URLs and valid XML escaping. Google documents supported formats and limits of 50,000 URLs or 50 MB per sitemap; a small business site usually needs no elaborate splitting strategy.

Keep modification dates truthful

If you include lastmod, use the date of a significant page change. Do not reset every date simply because a daily script ran or the copyright year changed. Keep the build record or editorial history that explains the values.

Publish and check

Place the file at a stable address and declare it in robots.txt where appropriate. Open the public file and check that it is valid XML rather than a branded error page. Verify the listed pages return the expected successful responses and do not point to the preview host.

Handle submission separately

An authorised property owner can submit the sitemap in Search Console and review its report. Publishing the file does not show that it has been submitted, read or indexed. Do not label those steps complete until there is evidence for each.

Keep the sitemap generation tied to the actual page inventory so additions and removals are reflected. Compare it with the visible navigation and internal links: useful pages should be discoverable by readers too. A sitemap helps discovery, but it does not guarantee indexing or rankings.
