How to plan a hosted payment link for a service website

Website Rebuild guides · Published · 2 min read

A hosted payment page lets a provider handle the checkout interface. Before adding a link, decide when a customer is allowed to pay and how the payment will be matched to the agreed service.

For a scoped project, confirm deliverables, supplier details, price, currency and cancellation terms in writing first. An enquiry button and a payment button serve different purposes. Do not invite immediate payment for work that still needs a feasibility or scope review.

Check the provider option

PayPal documents payment links created through a business account and shared on a website or directly with customers. Eligibility and available features vary by market and account. Check the documentation and the options in your own approved account before assuming the feature is available.

Review the checkout details

Use the provider's supported setup to check the service description, amount and currency. Keep an invoice or agreed project reference so the payment can be reconciled with the order. Do not place provider secrets in public HTML or use a visitor-entered URL parameter as evidence of a completed payment.

Test without charging a customer

Use the provider's supported test environment or preview where available. Inspect the destination and the cancellation route. If a real transaction is required, the account owner must authorise and perform it; checking a link does not require an unexpected live charge.

Decide how work starts

For a manual workflow, verify the relevant payment in the provider account and match it to the agreed order before starting. A return to a thank-you page is not payment confirmation. Automated fulfilment requires a separately designed server-side verification process.

Our website currently arranges payment after a written quote and has no live payment link enabled. This guide describes planning, not an active checkout or a guarantee that a particular account is eligible. Record the chosen process in the project scope and handover.
